Construction has begunLong awaited reconstruction of the former prison at Zamkowa Street in Kielce has begun. Buildings will be reconstructed and adapted to meet the needs of the institutions, which soon will occupy the premises; two separate institutions will be located side by side in the renovated plaza. This is the first phase of the investment, amounting to almost 13 million PLN allocated for revitalization program of the historic center of Kielce. The former prison at Zamkowa Street in Kielce is one of the oldest in Poland. During its long and bloody history the building witnessed hostile governments of two foreign powers, two world wars and both Nazi and Soviet occupations. Regina Kozakiewicz-Opalka Design Studio won the competition for architectural adaptation and conceptual design of the former prison complex and its surroundings. “Buildings will remain unchanged in their austere architectural style, being regarded as silent witnesses to history. Flat walls with openings crowned with a cornice. Only at points of access will minimal modern architectonic elements will be introduced – glass doors and simple partition walls – highlighting the entrances.” The eastern wing will be home to galleries for contemporary art and design while the industrial ceramic studios will be housed in the southern section. The renovation will also include a wall constructed along Zamkowa Street with landscape architectural elements- lawns, walkways, water and sewer connections, area and spacial illumination and exterior electrical installations. The building gate will be reconstructed to extend the walkway on the palace side. A section of a wall currently separating the building on Zamkowa Street will be demolished, geodetic surveys and archaeological services and supervision will be provided during all phases of the reconstruction.
